ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- While teenagers are enjoying prom, graduation and summer freedom, many of them are also having unprotected sex, according to the New Mexico Department of Health. Health department officials said testing in teens and young adults jumps this time of the year.
May means the start of summer vacation, but to scientists at SED Medical Laboratories, May also means a yearly uptick in STD testing.
"It might be because as school is ending, people are having summer flings and having more exposure to more partners, and then coming in because they know they're at risk," said OB/GYN Dr. Jody Stonehocker.
Historically in May, Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing in young men and women between the ages of 15 and 29 jump up 10 to 15 percent, the health department said.
In 2010, that demographic accounted for nearly 10,000 cases of Chlamydia. There were 95 confirmed cases of Chlamydia in girls between the ages of 10 and 14, and one expert said gonorrhea is on the rise.
"Generally, when people are young and starting to have sexual exploration, they have multiple partners," Stonehocker said. "Often people have intercourse with the same people in a high school situation or in a clique of friends. They'll have multiple partners in that clique and it'll get passed around back and forth."
Stonehocker said summer is certainly a good time to talk to teenagers about the risks of sex.
"No one likes to talk about uncomfortable things, but it's prevalent," she said.
Sandoval, McKinley and Cibola counties had the three highest rates of Chlamydia last year, but those numbers include all ages, not just high school- and college-aged students.
